The Lyric Opera of Chicago season begins this Saturday at noon with Jacques Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffman,” starring tenor Matthew Polenzani (pictured) as Hoffman. Impossibly beautiful music combined with flamboyant theatricality make this a popular production. KCSC’s Lane Whitesell hosts.

Join KCSC opera host Lane Whitesell this Saturday, May 5, at 11 a.m. for a half hour opera preview followed by the Metropolitan Opera broadcast of Leos Janacek’s “The Makropulos Case.” Count on a tour-de-force performance from Finnish soprano Karita Mattila (pictured) in this absorbing drama of a diva’s supernatural fight against her destiny.

This week the Metropolitan Opera broadcast airs at 10 a.m. Join KCSC host Lane Whitesell and this stellar cast for the second installment of Robert Lepage’s new production of the Ring cycle, Wagner’s “Die Walkure,” starring Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel as Wotan, lord of the Gods, and soprano Deborah Voight (pictured) as Brunnhilde.

Special note this week: the Metropolitan Opera broadcast of Wagner’s “Siegfried,” begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21. Tune in to part 3 of the Ring, as Wagner’s cosmic vision focuses on his hero’s early conquests. Tenor Jay Hunter Morris (pictured) sings the title role and soprano Deborah Voight’s Brunnhilde is his prize. KCSC’s Lane Whitesell hosts.

This week’s Metropolitan Opera broadcast is Giuseppe Verdi’s romantic tragedy “La Traviata,” at noon Saturday, April 14. Soprano Natalie Dessay (pictured) will put on the red dress as Violetta. Baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky performs as Germont and tenor Matthew Polenzani sings Alfredo.
