Filmscapes Intermission

Barbara Hendrickson
Executive Producer/Host

Filmscapes originally aired on KCSC from 1999 through 2004.  A shorter version of the show, Filmscapes Intermission, aired 2006-2007.   Beginning in 2010, KCSC will re-broadcast Filmscapes Intermission at 10:55 a.m. and 6:06 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Just as Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Sibelius and so many other composers wrote incidental music for the dramatic productions of their time, the tradition lives today.  Who can forget the lush expanse of Tara in Gone with the Wind, the stark intensity of the shower scene in Psycho, the bold call to defend the galaxy from evil in Star Wars...some of cinema's greatest moments, and all are punctuated by the unforgettable music of Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, and John Williams.  The richness and depth of film music is a vibrant part of our culture, and KCSC is proud to present a weekly program that explores this musical treasure.

Filmscapes is a daily five-minute-long program devoted to film music from the golden age to the present.  While most directors snubbed the idea of film music shortly after sound was introduced to the movies, worried that audiences would wonder where the music was coming from, it gradually gained recognition as an art form and today remains a prominent source of symphonic music.  Each week's program is based on a central theme and features both widely recognized and lesser known music.  Host and executive producer Barbara Hendrickson offers insight about each piece as she introduces it with background information about the film, composer, and the music itself.  Her favorite scores range from Danny Elfman's music for Beetlejuice and A Simple Plan, Franz Waxman's scores for Rebecca and Sunset Boulevard, Carter Burwell's score for Being John Malkovich, and Bernard Herrmann's music for Psycho and Taxi Driver. Her love for the music coupled with a talent for research and an engaging on-air presence made Filmscapes an instant success on KCSC and other public radio stations across the country.  Barbara says "I've always loved movies and have found a film's music often stays with me long after I leave the theater.  It's intriguing that the music can both be a complement to the images on the screen and stand on its own in the concert hall."

LISTENER PRAISE FOR FILMSCAPES

"I give up other radio and make sure my work is near my office radio just so I can listen to Filmscapes.  Film music has always been a part of my life and to get to hear it is something I value very much.  It brings back many good memories.  I appreciate the host and her interesting tidbits about the music and the films.  Thank you for presenting this program each day.  I also wish to congratulate everyone at KCSC for the programming which helps make my day.  The variety of classical music never bores me and I like how my favorites seem to come on just when I need to hear them.  Thank your for such quality programming."  –CES-

"I'm glad you have been doing these rebroadcasts.  The music is accessible, interesting, and...wonderful.  I always have turned up my classical nose at the genre, but now I realize what I've been missing. I almost entirely watch obscure, engaging independent films when I take the time to see movies, and so I have the odd issue of never having seen most all of the movies from which the "Filmscapes" music is drawn.  The rebroadcasts have happened to come on while I had KCSC streaming to my computer.  Thanks for the earopener." –Jim-

"I just love Filmscapes. I can't wait ‘til Fridays come along so I can listen to one of my favorite programs at KCSC." –John-

"I truly do love all the programs you have put together.  The music by John Williams was the one I was most interested in.   He has written so many great songs for movies.   We are blessed to have him and you to put it all together." –Esther-

"I would like to thank Barbara Hendrickson for Filmscapes.  You have no idea as to the number of service members who listened to this program in Iraq once it was introduced to them.  Many of the service members were surprised that this program was coming from Oklahoma.  As I went around my command in Iraq, a growing number of airmen/women, soldiers, and Marines were tuned into KCSC and Filmscapes.  And whether you believe it or not, Iraqis were listening as well.  To this day, I wait eagerly for the next Filmscapes broadcast.  I have taken Filmscapes to Germany, Italy, England, and Sweden in recent years.  It has received the same response—this is a good program!  If I could give you an award for excellence in programming, I would do so.  Thank you!" –Stephen-

"Filmscapes is my favorite program.  I really wish that it aired more often, but I understand how you all must share the air.  Filmscapes is truly special because it reminds me of so many wonderful movies I watched as a young boy, and how I loved a particular piece of music or theme song from a particular film, but I never knew who composed it or its full name or title.  Film scores and movie soundtracks are grossly underrated.  There are so many memorable films from Hollywood and overseas that are absolutely unforgettable largely due to their music.  Braveheart, Indiana Jones, Gandhi, The Mission, The Omen, Glory, the Star Wars films...the list goes on and on.  These movies would be nothing today if their music had been even slightly changed.  Now I know the titles and the composers of my most favorite pieces from the movies.  I am very grateful for Filmscapes to be playing these great pieces of music for all of us to enjoy and reminisce.  Plus, Barbara Hendrickson has a really sexy voice." -Kyle-
